The Irish decimal one-penny coin was introduced when Ireland changed to decimal currency in 1971.
Irish artist and sculptor Gabriel Hayes designed the ornamental bird on the reverse of the coin. Her design was inspired by decorative details found in early Irish illuminated manuscripts. The other side displays the Irish harp, the word “Éire” and the year 1986.
The 1986 penny was struck in bronze and has a diameter of approximately 20.32 mm and a weight of approximately 3.56 grams.
