The story behind the 1966 Irish threepence
The Irish threepence was part of Ireland’s pre-decimal currency and was worth three old pence. The coin features an Irish hare designed by artist Percy Metcalfe, whose animal designs were selected for Ireland’s first national coin series.
The other side displays the Irish harp, the word “Éire” and the year 1966. The harp design was adapted from the historic Brian Ború Harp held at Trinity College Dublin.
The 1966 threepence was made from cupro-nickel and measures approximately 17.7 mm in diameter. Ireland withdrew the threepence when the country changed to decimal currency.
