The first Irish Coin Committee was chaired by the poet WB Yeats and he ran a competition for designs which would reflect Ireland as a newly established state.

For 50th – there were no coins minted in Ireland in 1973, due to decimilisation happening in 1971, they minted millions of coins of the ‘new money’ as a small country Ireland did not mint coins each year!
